Warren County: Historical Information

Founded in 1796 by residents of Logan County, Warren County quickly grew thanks to river trade on the Barren and Green rivers. Bowling Green, the county seat, was a site of significant tension during the Civil War. Over the course of the war both Confederate and Union armies occupied the town, which placed a strain on its resources. Despite the presence of both armies, most residents of Warren County remained loyal to the Union throughout the war. Destruction caused by the Confederates necessitated a reconstruction of Bowling Green in the post-war era, culminating in the creation of a public education system in the 1880’s.

Advances in transportation technology helped grow Warren County’s popularity, and subsequently its business sector. Between the world wars, the county experienced significant growth due to an oil rush. While this growth was short lived, the county maintained its momentum through the great depression through various building projects. By the end of World War II, Warren County experienced an industrial boom leading to economic growth that has continued to the present day.
