Trego County was established on February 26, 1867 (Organized on June 21, 1879) from Unorganized Territory. The county was named in honor of Edgar P. Trego, captain of Co. H, 8th Kansas Infantry, who was killed in action at Chicamauga, Ga., on 19 Sept 1863.
