When was Sumter County, GA Created?
Sumter County was established on December 26, 1831 from Lee County ( portions of Sumter County were used to create Schley County in 1857). The county was named in honor of General Thomas Sumter (1734 - 1832), the "Fighting Gamecock," a hero of the Revolutionary War.
