When was Decatur County, GA Created?
Decatur County was established on December 8, 1823 from Early County  (portions of Decatur County were used to create Thomas County (1825) and Grady County (1905)). The county was named in honor of Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779 - 1820), a naval hero of the actions against the Barbary Pirates in the early 1800s.
