Rockingham County, New Hampshire

Rockingham County was founded on March 19, 1771 one of the five original counties identified for New Hampshire in 1769. The county was named in honor of Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782), a two-time Prime Minister of Great Britain (1765-1766, 1782). It was first settled by Europeans moving north from the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts as early as 1623. The government was linked tightly with Massachusetts until New Hampshire became a separate colony in 1679, but counties weren’t introduced until 1769.
