Rawlins County was established on March 20, 1873 (Organized on 1881) from Unorganized Territory. The county was named in honor of John Aaron Rawlins (1831-1869), Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s chief of staff and closest friend during the Civil War; he died a few months after accepting the position of Secretary of War in Grant’s first presidential administration.
