Hall County was established on December 15, 1818 from Cherokee Cessions of 1817 and 1819 (between 1818 and 1870, small amounts of land was transferred between Hall and neighboring counties ).

The County Courthouse was burned in 1851, and a replacement was built–but it burned also in 1882. The county’s next courthouse was built in 1884, but it was destroyed by a devastating tornando that hit Gainesville in 1936
