Refugio County was created on March 17, 1836 as one of the original 23 counties (originally created in July 1, 1834 , established as a municipality by Mexico). This county was named for its county seat, which was named for the Spanish mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio, "Our Lady of Refuge" .
