Maverick County was created on February 2, 1856 (organized on Sepember 4, 1871 ) from Kinney County. This county was named for Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803–1870), a rancher, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and representative in the Republic of Texas legislature .
