Harris County was created on March 17, 1836 as one of the original 23 counties (established as a municipality by the Provisional Government of Texas and originally named Harrisburg County until December 28, 1839). This county was named for John Richardson Harris, early settler and founder of Harrisburg, Texas, which eventually became known as Houston.
