Missouri Birth, Marriage, Divorce and Death records, also known as vital records, provide details about important events in your ancestors life. They can include information like the event date and place, parents’ names, occupation and residence. The cause of death is also included in most Missouri death records. Missouri vital records are a cornerstone of Missouri family history research because they were typically recorded at or near the time of the event, making the record more likely to be accurate. This page includes links that can help you request copies from Missouri state and county vital records keepers. Like in most other states, marriage records in Missouri are created at the county level.

No vital records were kept on the state level before 16 August 1909. In 1883 Missouri passed a state law requiring the recording of births and deaths at the county level.  In the city of St. Louis, deaths were recorded from 1850-1910 and births from 12 July 1870 through 1910. Prior to 26 June 1881, no marriage license was required; the marriage was recorded at any convenient courthouse.
