Crow Wing County was created on May 23, 1857 (Deorganized in 1867; Reorganized March 3, 1870) from Ramsey County. The county was named in honor of the Crow Wing River. Crow Wing is loose translation of Kagiwigwan, the Ojibway name for the river. A more accurate translation of this name may be "raven feather".
