Huron County was founded on April 1, 1840 (Organized on January 25, 1859) from Sanilac County. This county was named for Lake Huron. The French named "Lac des Hurons" for the Native American tribe they called "hure" (meaning "head") when they saw the fantastic way they dressed their hair.
