Cloud County (originially named Shirley County; was renamed to Cloud County on March 27, 1867) was established on February 27, 1860 (organized on September 06, 1866) as one of the original 36 counties. The county was named in honor of William F. Cloud, Union general in the American Civil War who chiefly fought in Kansas and Missouri. Shirley County was named for William Shirley, governor of Massachusetts Colony from 1741 to 1756.
