Indiana Historical & Genealogical Societies

For almost every state there is a state genealogical society, a state genealogical council, or both. In addition to their own work, Indiana groups in some cases help synchronize the efforts of local societies inside the Indiana. Research in Indiana Newspapers & Publications

Indiana Genealogical publications (magazines, newsletters, periodicals, books, etc.) feature all sorts of helpful facts related to specific ancestors, whole lineages and families, places in time, and about all types of genealogical records and repositories. They let you uncover a wealth of information and facts about your ancestors from many historical newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals. These types of resources can often supplement public records and offer you facts that is not recorded anywhere else. The Indiana Gazette was the first newspaper published in Indiana. Its first issue was published in 1804 at Vincennes. The Indiana State Library Archives Division and the Indiana University Library hold the biggest collections of newspapers in the state. "Indiana Newspaper Bibliography" lists the names of newspapers from across the state according to town, city, and county. An index to it is available. It contains around 8,000 listings covering the years of 1804 to 1980 and where those original newspapers or copies of them can be found today.

Starting as early as 1852 Indiana's county recorders began collection their own county's newspapers in bound volumes.

There are several major manuscript collections that contain Indiana genealogical information. Some of them can be found at the Indiana State Library and the Indiana Historical Society. One of those collections is Society of Friends Records (meetings minutes include records of marriages, births, deaths, removals, and new members). Another is Francis Vigo (fur trader) Collection; William H. English Collection (1741-1928).

The entries are not, however, limited to Methodists; they basically cover the states of Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. There are surname and geographical indexes.
