Ware County was established on December 15, 1824 from Appling County (portions of Ware County were used to create the following counties: Clinch in 1850, Coffee in 1854, Pierce in 1857, and Bacon in 1914).

The county was named in honor of Nicholas Ware (1769 – 1824), a U.S. Senator (1821 – 24).
