Madison County was established on December 5, 1811 from Clarke CountyElbert CountyFranklin CountyJackson County and Oglethorpe County (between 1813 to 1877 there have been numerous transfers of land between Madison and neighboring counties ). The county was named in honor of James Madison (1751 – 1836), the fourth President of the United States and the chief writer of the U.S. Constitution.
