Macon County was established on December 14, 1837 from Houston County and Marion County (portions of Macon County were used to create Taylor County (1852) and Peach County (1924) )

The county was named in honor of General Nathaniel Macon (1758 - 1837), Speaker of the House of Representatives and a U.S. Senator.
