St Clair County Quick Facts

  • Created Date / Origin:  Nov. 20, 1818 and was formed from Shelby County.
  • County Seat:  St. Clair is the only county in Alabama to have two county seats, Ashville and Pell City. Located in the northern part of the county, Asheville served as the county seat from 1821-1907. Ashville, originally called St. Clairsville, was named for John Ashe, a senator in the state’s first General Assembly. The Alabama Constitution of 1901 provided for Pell City in the southern part of the county to serve as the county seat for the Southern Judicial District of the county. A constitutional amendment in 1907 established Pell City, named for George H. Pell, an early settler, as the second county seat.
  • Named After: Arthur St. Clair (1736–1818) of Pennsylvania, a hero of the American Revolution. and President of Continental Congress
  • Bordering Counties: Etowah County (north), Calhoun County (east), Talladega County (southeast), Shelby County (southwest), Jefferson County (west), Blount County (northwest).

St Clair County Courthouse and Government Records

Researchers often overlook the importance of St Clair County court, probate, and land records as a source of genealogy and family history information. Buried away in Alabama courthouses and archives everywhere are the dreams and frustrations of many Alabama citizens. The chances are great that your ancestors have left a detailed record of at least some aspects of their lives in the St Clair County court records.

Please call the clerk’s department to confirm hours, mailing address, fees and other specifics before visiting or requesting information because of sometimes changing contact information. Even if your ancestor is not mentioned in a Court case, consider all of the other procedures which could have lead to him or her appearing in court records.

The Probate Judge presides over all probate court hearings for Probate of Wills, Administrations, Conservators, Guardianships, Adoptions, Legitimations, Name changes, Condemnations, Mental Commitment hearings, and performs marriage ceremonies.
