  • Created Date / Origin:  Dec. 18, 1832, from lands included in the Creek Indian Treaty of Cusseta, Mar. 24, 1832
  • County Seat: A site on Albert Crumpler’s plantation on Hatchemalega Creek was chosen as the county seat and given the name Lexington. In 1835 the name was changed to Rockford.
  • Named After: the Coosa River, which forms its western boundary. The word “Coosa” is believed to mean “cane-brake” in the Alibama-Kossati Indian dialect.
  • Bordering Counties: Talladega County (north), Clay County (northeast), Tallapoosa County (east), Elmore County (south), Chilton County (west), Shelby County (northwest)
  • Cities & towns include: Equality, Goodwater, Kellyton, Rockford

Coosa County Courthouse and Government Records

Researchers often overlook the importance of Coosa County court, probate, and land records as a source of genealogy and family history information. Buried away in Alabama courthouses and archives everywhere are the dreams and frustrations of many Alabama citizens. The chances are great that your ancestors have left a detailed record of at least some aspects of their lives in the Coosa County court records.

Please call the clerk’s department to confirm hours, mailing address, fees and other specifics before visiting or requesting information because of sometimes changing contact information. Even if your ancestor is not mentioned in a Court case, consider all of the other procedures which could have lead to him or her appearing in court records.
